The International Baccalaureate program's A-1 course is a literature course. In a way, the main questions at the forefront of our study of literature are: What is the author trying to accomplish? How does the author accomplish that? Along the way, we study how to construct a literary essay, draw literary comparisons, and throw in oral presentations, as well. The class continues over two years, and covers four units over that time. By the end of your second year, you'll be prepared for the I.B. assessments, written and oral, for A-1 English.
This year, we'll start by reviewing your summer reading, the novel 1984, by George Orwell.
Blood Wedding, by Federico García Lorca (modern drama)
We'll be examining and analyzing these works from that central perspective of the authors' purposes and techniques, as well as in terms of your own personal response to what you're reading.
