The International Baccalaureate program's A-2 language course is an excellent, interesting class full of issues, discussions, writing, and reading. The class continues over two years, and covers four units over that time. By the end of your second year, you'll be prepared for the I.B. assessments, written and oral, for your A-2 language.
This year, we'll start by reviewing your summer reading, the novel The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros.
Then, we'll cover the first half of the A-2 course (but not necessarily in this order):
Next year, you'll finish the course with the final two components (these contents may change, however):
Cultural Option Two: Global Issues
Prejudice and Racism
Conflict and Tolerance
Resource Management
Literary Option Two:
Poetry from World War I
The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien (novel)
Master Harold...and the Boys, by Athol Fugard (play)
We'll be thinking about these issues and readings from all sorts of angles using all sorts of sources--articles, essays, advertisements, scripts, pamphlets, reports, reviews, editorials, and more. These are called "text types". Your year-long assignment of bringing in different types of texts for the class to discuss can be found by clicking here.
