The Diary of a Young Girl, by Anne Frank

Pages 103-150 Reading/Review Questions

Please answer these questions on lined notebook paper.

These are NOT to be done in groups or pairs, but by yourself.

1.   18 August 1943—Page 103—Imagine that the next quiz starts with this question: What is the “communal task of the day” which everyone helps to do, Mr. Dussel criticizes Anne about, and Otto Frank does with concentration and precision?

2.   Friday August 20 is about a time when the workers downstairs go home and suddenly they are more “free” to relax.  You should know: Who is Boche?  (If you don’t know, the answer is on page 70.)

3.   10 September: What big political news happens on this day?

4.   16 September: Who is V.M.?  Why are they worried about him?

5.   Read the entry for Monday evening, 8 November: In your view, is this entry mostly optimistic, or mostly pessimistic?

6.   11 November: What is the subject of this entry?

7.   17 November is the anniversary of Mr. Dussel coming to the Annexe (being saved a terrible fate because of their generosity).  How does he behave on this special day?

8.   6 December: What is done to celebrate St. Nicholas’ Day this year?

9.   22, 24, 25, 27 December: Has this been a fairly good Christmas season or a fairly bad one?

10.  29 December: Why does Anne love and respect her grandmother?

11.  2 January: After more than a year in the hiding place, what does Anne now think when she looks back on her diary entries about her mother?

12.  5 January: What are the “two things” Anne confesses to her diary in this entry?  (The second thing is very personal and private!  Remember, this is her personal diary.)

13.  6 January: In this entry, Anne says she is not in love with Peter.  How does she feel about him?

14.  7 January: The “Peter” she talks about in this entry is NOT Peter Van Daan; it’s Peter Wessel (go back to page 2 and you’ll remember him).  How did she feel about Peter Wessel, and what happened to their relationship?  Describe her dream about him.  (“Petel” is a pet name for Peter.)

15.  12 January: Why did Anne used to pretend she was an orphan?

16.  15 January: What is one thing that the Van Daans and the Franks have fought about?

17.  22 January: In this entry, Anne decides to change her relationship to the Van Daans.  Describe her new attitude.  How is she going to change?

18.  24 January: This entry is about that subject Anne’s mother won’t talk about: sex.  But it is also about the warehouse cat, Boche.  (A “tom” is a male cat.)  What does the incident with the cat show Anne about Peter’s attitude toward sexual topics?

19.  27 January: What makes Anne change her hair style sometimes?

20.  28 January: What does Anne say about their dinnertime conversations in this entry?  And: Describe what Anne says about the Underground network in the country that is helping those in hiding.  What evidence is there that even the government of the Netherlands is on the side of the ones in hiding?

21.  3 February: What is “invasion fever”?  There is mention that the Germans will flood Holland; this would actually be easy to do, since much of it is lower than the water around it.  Only a system of dams, dikes, and windmills kept (and keeps) Holland from flooding.  In the conversations between Henk and the Secret Annexe, what even worse things do they imagine the Germans might do if they have to run away?
