Chapters 9 & 10 Review

Chapter 9

At the beginning of this chapter, Scout demands that Cecil Jacobs take back his comment, that ________

____________________________________________________________________.  When she confronts Atticus, he tells her not to use the word “___________________” because it’s “common.”  Atticus gives three reasons he is defending Tom Robinson in his trial:  If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be able to ______________________________________________________________________________ or ________________________________________________________________________________ or _________________________________________________________________________________.  He also gives Scout some more pieces of advice:  To try fighting with her ________________ instead of her fists.  And just “because we were _____________________________________________________

is no reason not to ___________________________________________.”  And Scout returns to school to confront Cecil Jacobs.  In the end, when Cecil tells her that her daddy is a disgrace to Maycomb, Scout ______________________________________________________________________________.  The episodes that take place at Christmas time introduce new characters to the novel.  One is Uncle Jack, a good character, who tells Scout not to ________________ unless there is “extreme provocation” because doesn’t Scout want to grow up to be a _________________?  (“I said not particularly.”)  It’s Uncle Jack who has brought long, thin packages, which are the kids’ Christmas presents from Atticus: _____________________________.    Another family member introduced is Cousin Francis, “the most ________________ child I ever met.”  He is the reason Scout gets in her next fight—not when he insults Scout by saying she runs wild, but when he insults ____________________ by calling him a “_____________________________”.  She hits him in the mouth, not even quite understanding the insult.  Uncle Jack breaks up the fight, and according to Scout later, at home, he made two mistakes:  One was that he didn’t _______________________________________________________________.  The second was that although he did hear Scout ____________________, she only did it under “_________________________________________.”  When Uncle Jack hears the full story, he wants to __________________________________________________________________________________, but Scout makes him promise not to _____________________________________________________.  Later, Scout overhears Jack talking to Atticus, who has some advice about dealing with children: “When a child asks you something, __________________________________________________________.”  He says, “Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when __________________________________

_______________________________________________ is something I don’t pretend to understand... I just hope that Jem and Scout ___________________________________________________________ instead of listening to the town.”

Chapter 10

Chapter 10 contains the title of the book in a sentence: “_______________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________.”  Miss Maudie says that’s because mockingbirds don’t disturb the garden, or make nests in corncribs; they only done one thing: _________________________________________________________________.”  The chapter seems mainly to be about finally proving that Atticus Finch can, indeed, “do something.”  It starts when a dog called _______________________________ comes walking down the street in an odd way.  It’s a “mad dog”.  (Although the word isn’t in the novel, the dog probably has _______________.)  Calpurnia calls downtown, and soon Atticus and _______________________________ show up in a car.  When a rifle is produced to shoot the dog, Jem and Scout are amazed that ________________________

___________________________________________________________________________________.  Although they had no idea, the nickname of Atticus when he was younger was ____________________.  When they question Miss Maudie about it, she explains that “If your father is anything, he’s ________________________________________________________” and that “People in their right minds never ________________________________________________________________________.”  A man named ________________________ (remember him; he’ll return as a minor character later on in the book) comes to pick up the dead dog’s body.  Jem warns Scout not to say anything about what happened to the kids at school: “I reckon if he’d wanted us to know it, __________________________.  If he was proud of it, ___________________________.”  Jem has the last word in the chapter, running toward the garage, shouting: “___________________________________________________________

________________________________________________!”
